Myunghee Bae was able to visit her son, Kenneth, as she had wished. The visit has prompted Myunghee to press for his release from detention, now more than ever. It has been 11 months since Kenneth was detained in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK – also known as North Korea).
Myunghee has released the following statement after visiting Kenneth in a DPRK hospital:
I have wrapped up my trip to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to visit my son, Kenneth Bae.
The DPRK authorities generously allowed me to visit my son three times. I am very grateful that my son Kenneth and I were able to spend those precious hours together. I was relieved to see that Kenneth’s health has been improving because of the medical treatment he has received for the last two months.
I was happy to see him and to hold him, but it broke my heart to leave him behind. I am more anxious than ever to bring him home. His year-long imprisonment has taken a heavy toll not only on Kenneth but on the whole family; every day the pain and anxiety continue to carve a deep scar on all of our hearts.
I plead with our government to do everything in their power to secure my son’s release soon.
Mother of Kenneth Bae
Kenneth is a US citizen, husband, and father of three, who has been sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. The family asks that the US government continue the active pursuit of his release and also asks the DPRK authorities for mercy, to allow Kenneth to be reunited with his family.
